Microdermabrasion, oxybrasion and cavitation peeling are often grouped together as cleansing treatments, but they are not the same. They differ in intensity, mechanism of action and which skin they suit best.
The choice of treatment should depend on the skin barrier, sensitivity, blackheads, redness, active acne and whether the skin has recently been exposed to acids or retinoids.
Diamond microdermabrasion
Diamond microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation of the epidermis using a tip. It can work well with thickened, dull and uneven skin, but it will not be the first choice with strong redness, active inflammation or a very sensitive barrier.
Oxybrasion
Oxybrasion is often perceived as a gentler form of refreshment, because it uses a jet of saline and air. It can be considered for skin that needs gentler smoothing and refreshing without strong friction.
Cavitation peeling
Cavitation peeling works superficially and can be a good choice when light cleansing, refreshing and preparing the skin for the next stages of care are needed. With a larger number of blackheads, manual facial cleansing or a combined plan may be better.
How to choose?
- thicker, dull, uneven skin: microdermabrasion can be considered
- more sensitive skin needing refreshment: it is often better to start with oxybrasion
- light care and skin preparation: cavitation peeling may be enough
- closed comedones and larger congestion: sometimes a cleansing plan is needed
- active irritation, recent acids or a retinoid: barrier regeneration first
If you do not know which treatment will be best, it is worth starting with a consultation. Sometimes the skin needs cleansing, and sometimes, above all, calm.
