The sun and active treatments are a combination that needs a plan. After peels, microneedling, mesotherapy and work on discolouration, the skin can be more reactive, and UV exposure increases the risk of redness, irritation and new spots.
That is why, before a holiday, we do not choose the strongest procedure at the last minute. We choose one that the skin will have time to calmly regenerate from.
A solarium is not a safe alternative
UV radiation from a solarium also damages the skin and accelerates photoageing. After exfoliating or stimulating treatments it additionally increases the risk of discolouration and irritation. If you are planning a series for discolouration, a solarium is an especially bad idea.
When to postpone a treatment?
- with a fresh tan or sunburn
- just before a holiday in strong sun
- if the skin is peeling after retinol or acids
- when you are not ready for daily SPF and reapplication
- with active redness, irritation or discolouration after UV
SPF after a treatment is the minimum
A broad-spectrum filter with SPF 30 or higher should be used daily and reapplied when spending time outdoors. After treatments, a hat, sunglasses, shade and avoiding the hours of strongest sun are also important.
For treatments such as ME Line, PRX-T33 or Dermapen, the aftercare recommendations are part of safety, not an add-on.
What to choose close to a holiday?
If there is little time before your trip, a hydrating treatment, gentle cleansing or a facial massage is often safer than strong exfoliation. Before the sun, the skin should be calm, not irritated.
The best treatment result can easily be ruined by the sun. Planning the dates is just as important here as the treatment itself.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I avoid the sun after a treatment?
Depending on the procedure, usually from a few days to a few weeks with stronger treatments. The exact time is given by the cosmetologist in the aftercare instructions.
Is a tanning bed safer than the sun?
No. A tanning bed also emits UV radiation, damages the skin and increases the risk of pigmentation, especially after treatments.
Is SPF alone enough after a treatment?
SPF is the basis, but it is worth adding a hat, sunglasses, shade and avoiding the hours of strongest sun. The filter also has to be reapplied.
